Deaf Tips Video Series - Live Captions on an iPhone
Our Regional Outreach Officer, Gary, shows us how turn on live captions on an iPhone to make a phone call. This is for those that feel comfortable speaking and using captions during phone calls. However, Live Captions on iPhones can also ...be used to support in-person conversations, video calls, watching videos that don't already have captions, and more.
We are proudly delivering projects for the Peer Support and Capacity Building (PSCB) grant for the NDIS.
This video shares tips only. We are not affiliated with or sponsored by any brands, products, or apps shown.
Transcript: Welcome to Deaf Tips. I'm gonna show you how to make a phone call with captions on an iPhone - take a look! On the settings app, you're gonna go to Accessibility, scroll down to Live Captions, and toggle Live Captions "ON". And there you have it. To use this feature, you will need iOS 26 or later on your iPhone and it will automatically work. If you don't have iOS 26 or later, you can still use this function, but you will need to change the language settings to US English.

The Victorian state election is coming up later this year. Recent federal and state budgets included very little new funding for deaf and hard of hearing people. Deaf Victoria believes this is not good enough and is continuing advocacy to make sure our communityโs needs are recognised during the ...election.
Five key issues are being raised with political parties: Deaf education policy, a Deaf Hub, an Auslan Commission, deaf mental health services, and better access support for deaf people in hospitals. Deaf Victoria will share clear information showing which parties support which issues, to help our community make an informed voting choice.
Check out the Auslan video for more details, or read the transcript in the comments.

Deaf Tips Video Series - Text Enlargement Apps
Our manager, Philip, shows us how he uses text enlargement apps for communication at a local cafe.
Thank you to the lovely staff at @fieldworkcoffee for their excellent coffee and for letting us film at their cafe!

Transcript: Hi, welcome to Deaf Tips! I'm here at the cafe, feeling really keen for some coffee, which I'll order. I'm going to show you how I make text large on my phone, to make it easy to communicate. Come along! - Thank you. Ahh, that hits the spot. You know, you can use this not only a cafe, but shops, restaurant, bars, and various places to communicate with people with large text apps. Taxis, too! There's numerous places you can use it. From obersvation, it seems the deaf community likes, for those with Apple phones, an app called "Big", or one called "Cardzilla". For Android users, a suggestion is an app called "Large Text: Signboard" - just from what we've seen. However, when you go to the app stores for either Apple or Android, there'll be plenty of options to choose from, depending on your preference. If you have a favourite app that's your go-to, please put the app name down in the comments. And if you like Deaf Tips, which will have more videos upcoming for, make sure to follow Deaf Victoria for similar tips down the track. Cheers!

I've been recieving a lot of requests from the deaf community for consultations about future advocacy topics, where you can all share your input. Iโve already held a few consultations, and there are more coming up. However some of you arenโt able to attend in person or live too far away. Because of that, weโll host an online consultation on Wednesday 27 May, at 6pm. The link is in the description - you can join through there. Weโll have an online discussion together and share perspectives. I wish I could visit every location across Victoria, but unfortunately Iโm limited to ten locations only. See you there. Cheers!

Celebrating a proud achievement in our Melbourne Deaf community โ Ramas McRae @deafrunningbeard has completed his PhD, earning doctor status, with a focus on mental health research. Well done, Ramas!
Transcript: Wow! Over the weekend I saw some fantastic news announced. Someone from our ...Melbourne Deaf community has achieved their PhD, meaning they have earned doctor status. That person is Ramas McRae. Incredible. His research focuses on mental health and related areas, and he completed his PhD at Deakin University. Iโm sure youโll share my feelings as I congratulate him for his recent acheivement. Not many Deaf people have a PhD โ Gab Hodge has one, and a few others โ but it is still quite rare. Thatโs why this achievement is something we should truly celebrate, along with Ramasโs determination and hard work. Congratulations again on completing your PhD!

A petition is one way you can have a say to parliament on an issue that matters to you. Watch this short Auslan video to find out more about petitions, how they work and how you can get involved.
Produced in partnership with @victorianparliament
Transcript: Another way to be ...involved in the parliamentary process is through petitions. Do you know what that is? You might have concerns about services that need to be improved. A petition is a set of written recommendations about an issue that can be submitted to parliament. You will need to collect many signatures from people who share similar concerns. Once you have gathered the signatures, you need to find an MP to support your petition and submit it to parliament. The petition then becomes a public record, meaning other members of the public can view it. For example, there is a petition for deafConnectEd, an organisation that provides access to support for deaf and hard of hearing students. Digital petitions can be easier to manage than hardโcopy petitions. You can visit https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/petitions to see what petitions are available if you want to learn more.
